The three-day Muslim festival marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan in most Muslim majority countries.

Muslims around the world will celebrate the three-day Eid al-Fitr festival this weekend. Depending on the sighting of the moon, Eid will either start on Friday June 15 or Saturday June 16.

Eid al-Fitr means "festival of breaking the fast" and marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. It is celebrate for three days, and on the morning of the first day, Muslims gather for prayer.

Eid is also infused with different traditions in different countries. Every Muslim that has financial capabilities is required to give Fitrah (Eid alms) which is equivalent to a meal. In Portugal it is 3.50€ per person this year.

It begins with the first sighting of the new moon, so most of the time Muslims have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date. There is lots more to write about Eid indeed.
