Food Technology

The food supply chain is changing from a local business to a global venture due to rapid developments in food technology, food transportation and food trade. Halal food emerged as a serious international business opportunity due to an increase in demand by 1.2 billion Muslim consumers. The guidelines given in the Quran and the Hadith are the basis for all halal food regulations and enclose the production, procurement, processing, sale and consumption of food.

Food technology is controlled through our specialists and consultants. To ensure Halal compliance we visit the manufacturers and their packaging units, constantly and without warning.

The concept of Halal has always been a leading one for Muslim consumers, but it had primary importance for local businesses mostly. In the past fifteen years, this has changed dramatically. Now, there is a global market for Halal products and services which continues to expand to more and more countries.

Estimates suggest that the value of the global Halal market exceeds US$1.1 trillion. Experts taking into consideration the smaller local markets and industries determine the value to be approximately US$2.4 trillion. The consumers in this global market are nearly 1,2 billion. An important trend is that in many regional markets where the Muslim population is actually smaller, the individual purchase power of consumers is quite high.

The market covers all continents and all Muslim countries plus most countries with large Muslim population. The Muslim countries such as Malaysia which first adopted formal Halal certification gained momentum in the global trade. There are more non-Muslim countries, primarily in Asia and the Pacific region, which have focused on the production and export of Halal products.

The primary goods traded include meat, other types of foods, food products and beverages. The share of other Halal products is smaller, approximately 40%, but the demand for them is growing strong as well.

The largest share of the global Halal market is taken by food. It is approximately 60%. Within the global Halal food trade, meat takes approximately two thirds while the remainder is for processed foods, bakery products and confectionary. It has been estimated that the Halal food trade currently accounts for 12% of the global trade in agricultural and food products.

Overall, the global market for Halal products and services is quite large and has further potential for growth.
